Dentures

John Pietruszka DDS in Staten Island NY

Dentures are replacements for missing teeth which can be removed and placed back into the mouth as the patient so chooses. Depending on each individual patient case, a patient may need full or partial dentures. Full dentures are used when all of the natural teeth are removed from the mouth.  There are two types of full dentures.

  • Immediate Full Dentures - Prior to having the teeth removed, the dentist takes impressions and has dentures fabricated to the approximate shape of the mouth. After removing the teeth, the denture(s) are immediately placed in the mouth. The benefit is that the patient does not have to spend any time without teeth.  Follow up visits are neccessary to refit and reline the dentures because the ridges will change shape as the mouth heals. The dentures will need to be tightened after the ridge has remodeled and healed.

  •  Conventional Full Dentures - This is when all the teeth have been removed and the resulting ridge is given time to heal before the dentures are placed. It can take about 6 weeks for the gum tissue to heal completely. The patient usually wears the previous set of dentures during this period.

  • Partial dentures are another option when the patient has healthy teeth remaining. This is considered a removable bridge. It is not a permanent fixture in your mouth. Patients are able to remove this appliance.

New dentures may take some time to get used to. The pink colored base of the dentures is placed over your gums. People may say that it feels bulky or there is not enough room for their tongue. In other cases the dentures might feel loose. These feelings may affect the way the patient eats and speaks for a little while. Over time, the mouth musculature becomes trained to eat and speak with the dentures, and they begin to feel more natural. They may never feel perfectly comfortable, but it is much better than the alternative of not having teeth.

Even though dentures are not considered real teeth, the patient should care for them as if they were. After they have been removed, place them in room temperature water or a denture cleaning solution. Do not use hot water because it may change the shape of the denture.

The dentures are delicate. Be sure to be careful when handling them so you do not drop them. Do not try to adjust the dentures yourself. It is east to damage them. The patient should always seek assistance from the dentist if they feel uncomfortable or loose.
