Crowns

Over time, teeth can sometimes weaken and become more susceptible to problems such as decay, cracks, fractures, broken fillings, and discolorations.  If the dentist notices that a tooth is decayed or weakened, a crown may be necessary to restore the tooth properly; a large filling or bonding may not be sufficient.

Crowns can be fabricated from porcelain (such as E-Max), porcelain fused to metal (gold), or full gold.  To maintain a natural look and feel, a porcelain finished crown is best, as it can be matched to the shade of the other teeth.  This will allow it to blend in and appear just like one of the natural teeth.

The process of fabricating a crown takes 2-3 visits to the dentist.  On the first visit, the tooth will be re-shaped by prepping the enamel so that the crown can be placed over it.  A local anesthetic will be given before this part of the procedure, so that the patient does not experience any discomfort.  Once the tooth has been reshaped, an impression will be taken of that tooth and the surrounding teeth.  This mold will be sent to a quality dental lab. The new crown will be made so that it fits properly and looks the same, relative to the surrounding teeth.  Before leaving, your dentist will fit a temporary crown to cover the tooth until the permanent crown is ready.

The crown usually takes about 2 weeks to be returned to the dentist.  Another appointment is necessary to place and fit the permanent crown.  After all the adjustments are made, the crown is cemented with permanent dental cement.  Crowns are durable and will usually last about 7-10 years.

The patient should care for the crown as with any of the other teeth, with regular brushing and flossing.
